Chelmsford Station Square

AREA have designed a new public square for one of the busiest commuter stations in the South East of England, catering for over 10 million passengers a year.

The proposal set out to respond to the distinctive Chelmsford streetscape and to visually and physically connect the station seamlessly with the adjacent newly refurbished area of Duke Street and our project for Genesis Housing at City Park West.

The complex and confined site at the gateway to the city centre required detailed analysis of circulation, access issues, levels and materials.

Granite and high quality concrete paving were specified bespoke step units were commissioned and the use of elegantly curving disappearing steps, bespoke bench features and lighting have created a pleasant and accessible frontage to the newly remodelled station building.
