AREA landscape architects have played a key role in the core design team developing proposals for the former Anglia Ruskin University campus site, which occupies a key strategic position in Chelmsford town centre. AREA had design responsibility for the public realm including new streets, squares and courtyards at both ground and podium deck level.
Development of this scheme, which provides 219 new homes, 515m2 retail and 3434m2 of commercial space, has been on-going since 2008 and has involved negotiating a complex planning situation and has been procured as a single stage design and build contract.
Following a successful planning application in 2012 AREA has been appointed as ‘design guardian’ by our client Genesis Housing Group to oversee the implementation on site [currently on site – Phase 1 due for completion July 2015.).
Phase 2 involves creating new public space including a garden plaza acting as interface between an existing park and a quadrangle to provide a new setting for a heritage building was awarded planning permission at the end of 2014 and is now starting on site.
